Hardness determines both the machinability and durability of wood, making some wood better for use in certain applications.  The Janka Hardness Test measures the force required to embed a .444-inch steel ball to half it’s diameter in wood.  It is a good guide to the ability of any particular wood species to withstand denting and wear.
